Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art that focuses on gaining dominant position and then using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to give up.  BJJ teaches that a small  person can defeat a much bigger and stronger opponent with technique rather than strength.  Brazilian Jiu Jitsu came to prominence when Royce Gracie exploded onto the mma scene and won 3 out of the first 4 Ultimate Fighting Championships.  He was able to defeat men over 100 pounds heavier than him using chokes and joint locks he was taught by his grandfather, Helio Gracie, who some say invented Brazilian Jiu Jitsu.

Many of the techniques used in BJJ can also be found slightly modified in other disciplines.  Some of its throws and submissions are found in judo, both being Japanese martial arts.

There are a few basic positions in BJJ.  One of which is the guard.  There are a few different types of guards as well.  3 types of guards are closed, open and butterfly.  These postitions are used to defend against attacks as well as to set up submissions.
