Georges "Rush" St. Pierre (a.k.a. GSP) was
born on May 19, 1981 in Quebec, Canada. The French Canadian
mma star is currently ranked the #2 170 lbs fighter in the world.
St. Pierre started training in karate at age six and had his first
professional fight at age sixteen, scoring a knockout with a kick to
the head. GSP joined the UFC in 2002 and ripped off seven
straight victories before being stopped by
Matt Hughes in 2004 in St. Pierre's first title shot. He
rebounded with six straight victories, including a split decision
over B.J. Penn and a K.O. of
Matt Hughes to win the welterweight
title. Unfortunately for GSP, his reign as champion was short
lived. He was knocked out by Matt Serra in a stunning upset in
just his first title defense. Due to a recent back injury,
Matt Serra will not be able to defend his welterweight title so The
Ultimate Fighter finale has turned into an interim title fight with
St. Pierre taking Serra's place.
After his beat down of Matt Hughes, GSP is on top of the welterweight division once again. It will be interesting to see if St. Pierre can live up to the hype and hold on to his belt. MMA RECORD - 15-2 NEXT OPPONENT - Matt Serra in UFC 83 on April 19, 2008. |
