Mirko
Filipovic was born on September 10, 1974 in Croatia. This
former Croatian police officer and kickboxer turned mixed martial
artist goes by the nickname "Cro Cop" due to his time spent in law
enforcement. His career began in K-1 kickboxing where Cro Cop
scored a number of impressive knockouts with his devastating left
foot. After five years of K-1 fighting from 1996-2000 he tried
his hand at mixed martial arts by joining PRIDE in 2001.
Mirko's PRIDE career started with two fights with some strange rules. If the fights went to a decision they were automatically ruled a draw. Both fights ended in draws with the most notable being against then champion Wanderlei Silva. After some impressive victories in Pride Mirko got a title shot in 2003 angainst Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira but was defeated due to his lack of ground fighting skills. Mirko would win his first Pride title in 2006 but would later sign a deal to fight for the UFC stating money as is reason for the move. While Cro Cop's UFC career has not gone as planned, he has certainly delivered some of the most devastating knockouts the sport has ever seen. Mirko says that after his six fight deal with the UFC is fulfilled he plans to rejoin the Croatian Anti-Terrorist Squad and he has been signed by a professional football team. MMA RECORD - 16-7 |
