The Ultimate Fighter Finale

The fight card for the TUF finale features an under card that could prove to be a worthy warm-up for the main event.  The championship fight features Tommy "The Farmboy" Speer vs. Mac Danzig and this fight is gonna be good.

Danzig has a wealth of experience and has won many mma tournaments and was the King of the Cage in the lightweight division five times before finally making it to the UFC.  On the show he appeared to be all business and I think his heart and mental toughness are going to carry him through this fight.  He also has 6 years more experience than his opponent does and you can't learn to defend against an armbar milking a cow.  I think Mac will win The Ultimate Fighter contract and will immediately drop back down to lightweight for his next few fights.  Look for this guy to be a solid fighter as he starts to train with the elite fighters of the UFC.

Tommy "The Farmboy" Speer is a much bigger and stronger fighter than Danzig.  He was a college football player and wrestler.  His fighting style is simple: take em' down and ground and pound.  If Danzig can avoid letting Speer control the fight and take him down Speer will simply get outclassed.  Look for Speer to try and land one good shot and capitalize on it. I think this the only way Speers is going to take advantage of his size, and his boxing background could make for some fireworks.

Saturdays Ultimate Fighter finale turned out to be an exciting night of mixed martial arts action.  Ben "Killa B" Saunders took care of Dan Barrera in a pretty boring fight where Barrera spent the better part of 3 rounds stalling and trying not to get hit, throwing in an occasional half-ass single leg attempt.  Saunders' kicks and ground skills were too much for Barrera and Saunders won a unanimous decision.

George Sotiropoulos avoided an early flurry by Miles to take his back within the first 30 seconds.  After some punishing body shots and some hammer-fists to the head, he sunk in a body triangle and ultimately a rear-naked choke.  George controlled the fight from start to finish and Miles took a mighty butt kicking.

The next televised fight was Troy "Rude Boy" Mandaloniz vs. Richie "The Dirty Samurai" Hightower.  This fight was a nice one.  Hightower seemed to be doing well, striking Mandaloniz at will.  Mandaloniz returned some nice shots of his own and we had a slugfest on our hands.  Hightower was caught with a nasty knee midway through the round and caught late in the first with a stiff jab that sent him sprawling.  Mandaloniz capitalized and hammered his face until the referee stepped in.

Jared "J-Roc" Rollins and John "War Machine" Koppenhaver put on one heck of a show tonight.  This fight was a brawl at times and a jiu jitsu clinic the next.  It started off with a quick takedown by Rollins and this gave Koppenhaver a chance to show off his guard.  Koppenhaver reversed Rollins half-way through the round and they were knotted up for most of the round.  That round had to go to Koppenhaver.

The second round started off with Rollins crushing Koppenhaver with a knee that split his forehead wide open.  He was somehow able to take Rollins down immediately following the blow with his blood making a mess of things.  They trade some close range shots and are stood up by the referee.  Much of the same until late in the round Rollins gets Koppenhaver's back and threatens to end the fight.  The round ends with Rollins pounding Koppenhaver's face.

The third round starts off with two exhausted fighters stalling and defending on the mat.  After a stand up by the ref, Rollins absolutely blasts Koppenhaver in the face with two knees and it looks bad for Richie.  He is dazed and pinned up against the cage with Rollins in his guard when out of nowhere he reverses Rollins and TKO's him with an elbow.  What a fight that was.

The Ultimate Fighter finale championship fight was pretty much what we expected.  Danzig outclassed Speer from start to finish.  Speer's lack of experience really showed.  Danzig and Speer came out an tussled for a minute or so before Danzig took Speer down and pounded away.  A dazed Speer gave up his back and was submitted by rear-naked choke just over 1:30 into the first round.

Clay "The Carpenter" Guida vs. Roger "El Matador" Huerta was one sided for most of the fight.  Guida controlled most of this fight but could not account for Huerta's heart.  The first round starts out with Guida taking Huerta to the mat and Huerta stalling with a frustrated look on his face for about two minutes.  Then Guida took control of the fight, relentlessly attacking Huerta with submission attempts before an illegal blow reset the fighters in the middle.  Guida and Huerta then exchange very hard shots for a while before Guida took Huerta's back and controlled the rest of the round.  Very nice start to this one.

Big shot by Guida to start the second followed by a nice double-leg takedown.  After a minute of defensive ground fighting, they stand up and go "Tank Abbott" on each other again.  Guida is blasting Huerta repeatedly when they stand up and Huerta is dropped by a monster right.  Guida pounds away at Huerta for a full minute but this kid will not give up.  What a beating Huerta took the last minute and a half of that round.

The third round looks like a scene out of a Rocky movie, with thirty straight seconds of power shots traded when Huerta crushes Guida with a left knee that sent him falling forward grasping for a double-leg.  Huerta hammered at Guida's head and spun around to Guida's back and finished him off with a rear-naked choke.  Huge win for Huerta here and he really showed what he is made of in this fight.

     Great night of fighting!
